I use a plugin for galleries (can't recall its name right now but it's on the extension directory). You upload images to the Media Manager (e.g. in a subfolder like images/gallery), then in your article, insert a short code specifying the folder name e.g. {plg_gallery}gallery{/gallery}.
The plugin knows to look in a folder within /images for the folder name specified ("gallery") so you don't need to specify the full path name to the images folder. The plugin will create thumbnails for all images found in the specified folder. For maintenance, it's a matter of adding or deleting images from that folder under Media Manager (or if you prefer, by FTP or your webhost's file manager utility in your web hosting control panel).
You have some control over layout through the extension such as padding and margins between thumbnails, and I think you can specify thumbnail size. You could tweak it further with custom CSS I expect.
Otherwise, it's a basic gallery that fits well in any place you can add content including articles, modules etc.
When I have a moment I will return and give the plugin's link.
